401(k) Match & Vesting

  • Amazon matches 50% of your contributions, up to 4% of your base salary—so if you contribute 4%, Amazon chips in 2%.
  • Employer match vests on a three-year cliff; your own contributions are always 100% vested.

RSU Vesting Schedule

  • For new hires, Amazon RSUs vest over four years: Year 1: 5%, Year 2: 15%, Year 3: 40%, Year 4: 40%. These schedules apply to new hire grants, and you’ll typically receive additional RSU awards over time.
  • Annual stock awards: You may receive these awards upon being hired, as part of your annual compensation package, or as a special award.

Mega Backdoor Roth (after-tax 401(k))

  • You can contribute after-tax dollars up to the 2025 401(k) limits: $70,000 if you’re under 50, $77,000 if you’re 50 or older, and $81,250 if you’re age 60–63. These limits include employee contributions, employer match, and after-tax contributions.
  • If you select “convert my after-tax to Roth,” Fidelity handles automatic in-plan Roth conversions daily—making growth tax-free post-conversion.

401(k) Match & Vesting

  • Microsoft matches 50% of your contributions, up to IRS limits—so if you max out pre-tax/Roth at $23,500 in 2025, Microsoft adds up to $11,750.
  • Both your contributions and the match vest immediately.

Mega Backdoor Roth

  • Microsoft supports after-tax contributions up to the 2025 401(k) limits: $70,000 if you’re under 50, $77,000 if you’re 50 or older, and $81,250 if you’re age 60–63.
  • They also offer automatic in-plan Roth conversions, making growth tax-free downstream.

ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan)

  • You can contribute up to 15% of your salary each quarter, and purchase Microsoft stock at a 10% discount. (Taxation depends on holding period)

RSUs

  • For new hires, Microsoft RSUs typically vest over four to five years, taxed as ordinary income at vesting. These schedules apply to new hire grants, and you’ll usually receive annual stock awards as part of your ongoing compensation.

GSU (Google Stock Units) Vesting Schedule

  • For new hires, standard sign-on GSUs vest over four years: Year 1: 33%, Year 2: 33%, Year 3: 22%, Year 4: 12%.
  • You may receive additional stock awards as part of your annual package or as a special award.

Tax Treatment & Withholding

  • GSUs are taxed as ordinary income when they vest.
  • Google typically withholds 22% for federal taxes, or 37% if supplemental income exceeds $1M. Actual liability may be higher, so planning is key.

Trading Windows & 10b5-1 Plans

  • GSUs must be sold during approved trading windows, or via an Employee Trading Plan (ETP) that automates pre-set selling.

401(k) Match & Mega Backdoor Roth

  • Google matches dollar-for-dollar up to $3,000, or 50% of contributions up to the IRS limit ($11,750 for 2025), whichever is higher.
  • They also support after-tax 401(k) contributions, allowing a Mega Backdoor Roth strategy up to the 2025 limits: $70,000 if under 50, $77,000 if 50+, and $81,250 for ages 60–63.

RSU Vesting Schedule

  • For new hires, Meta RSUs generally vest evenly over four years, with quarterly vesting (25% per year, divided into 6.25% each quarter). Vesting dates are typically February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15. Additional RSU awards are often granted as part of annual compensation or performance recognition.

Tax Withholding & Planning

  • RSUs are taxed as ordinary income when they vest. Default withholding is 22%, but you can adjust up to 37% if needed—changes must be made one week before vest dates.

401(k) Match & Mega Backdoor Roth

  • Meta matches 50% of employee contributions up to the IRS deferral maximum. For 2025, that means:
    • Under age 50: match up to $11,750
    • Age 50+: match includes catch-up contributions, so total match can be $15,250.
  • Meta offers after-tax 401(k) with automatic Roth conversions, enabling the Mega Backdoor Roth strategy up to the 2025 limits: $70,000 if under 50, $77,000 if 50+, and $81,250 for ages 60–63.

Not at Amazon, Microsoft, Google, or Meta? No problem. Many tech companies—large and small—offer similar benefits that raise the same questions.

Equity Compensation (Stock-Based Pay)

  • RSUs: Vest over time, taxed as ordinary income at vesting.
  • Stock Options (ISOs and NSOs): Options to buy stock at a set price; ISOs may qualify for special tax treatment.
  • ESPPs: Buy company stock at a discount (usually 10–15%) via payroll deductions.

401(k) and Retirement Plans

  • Most companies now offer pre-tax and Roth 401(k) options.
  • Some also offer after-tax contributions, creating the opportunity for a Mega Backdoor Roth conversion. For 2025, the limits are $70,000 if under 50, $77,000 if 50+, and $81,250 for ages 60–63.

Other Benefits You Might See

  • Employer Match: Often dollar-for-dollar up to a certain % of salary; vesting schedules vary.
  • Deferred Compensation Plans: Allow some employees to delay income into future years.
  • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs): Triple-tax-advantaged savings for health costs, often overlooked as a stealth retirement tool.
  • Insurance Benefits: Disability, life, and umbrella coverage through work may need supplementing.

Why This Matters:
These benefits can be incredible wealth-building tools—but only if you know how to use them. Without a plan, it’s easy to be over-concentrated in company stock, miss tax-saving opportunities, or leave free money on the table.

As a resident or new attending, your focus is often on building your career—not your finances. But laying the groundwork early can save you years of stress and missed opportunities. We help you:

  • Student loan repayment strategies: Choosing between forgiveness programs, refinancing, or aggressive paydown.
  • Budgeting & cash flow: Building a sustainable lifestyle without letting “doctor pay” lead to lifestyle creep.
  • Insurance planning: Making sure disability and life insurance coverage actually protects you and your family.
  • Retirement savings: Understanding when to start contributing to a 401(k), 403(b), Roth IRA, or backdoor Roth IRA.
  • Career path planning: Whether you’re considering academics, private practice, or hospital employment, we’ll map out the financial implications of each.

Why it matters: The habits and choices you make in the first few years of your career set the trajectory for decades to come. Getting it right early can mean financial independence years ahead of schedule.

By now, you’re established in your career and likely earning more than you ever expected. That comes with opportunity—but also complexity. This stage is about making your money work as hard as you do. We help you:

  • Tax-smart strategies: Minimizing taxes on your growing income through retirement contributions, charitable giving, and advanced planning.
  • Investment management: Aligning your portfolio with your goals while managing risk across taxable accounts, retirement accounts, and practice ownership.
  • Private practice planning: If you’re starting or running your own practice, we’ll guide you through entity structure, retirement plan design, and cash flow management.
  • Family planning needs: Funding children’s education, protecting income with insurance, and caring for aging parents.
  • Lifestyle vs. long-term goals: Helping you enjoy today while still building for tomorrow.

Why it matters: This is often the peak of your earning potential. Smart planning here can accelerate your path to financial freedom—or set you up for a secure retirement while still enjoying the life you’ve worked so hard for.

After a successful career, you’re thinking about slowing down, retiring, or transitioning into a new role. This stage is about protecting what you’ve built and planning for the future you want. We help you:

  • Retirement readiness: Determining if you have enough to retire and creating a sustainable withdrawal strategy.
  • Practice transition: Selling or winding down a private practice in the most tax-efficient way.
  • Estate planning coordination: Reviewing wills, trusts, and powers of attorney to ensure your wishes are honored.
  • Philanthropy & legacy: Designing charitable giving strategies that align with your values.
  • Tax planning in retirement: Coordinating Social Security, Medicare, RMDs, and Roth conversions to minimize lifetime taxes.
  • Portfolio risk management: Adjusting your investment strategy for stability and predictable income.

Why it matters: These are high-stakes decisions. Without careful planning, taxes, poor timing, or missed opportunities could erode what you’ve worked decades to build.

Our Seven Step Process

Whether you’re a tech pro or a physician, here’s what you can expect if we decide to partner together.

Get Started

The Complimentary Consultation is our first step. This Zoom meeting or phone call is our chance to get to know each other a little, ask some questions, and determine whether we’re the right fit to help you navigate your journey. We’ll discuss service options, costs, and discuss your primary goals and objectives.

Once you decide to move forward with Valiant FP, you will sign a client engagement letter. This engagement letter will clearly outline the scope and cost of our services so you know exactly what to expect.

This is our first real planning meeting. Here we will dive deep into your current financial picture. We will discuss your cash flow and net worth. We will review your portfolio, Risk & Protection strategies and any special circumstances that are on your mind.

Next, we will look at your future and explore what you want your life to look like. We’ll discuss your current lifestyle as well as the goals you have for your life in the future. We’ll also work to understand what steps you’ve been taking to achieve those goals.

Next we run an evaluation to see whether what you are currently doing is enough to get you to your goals or if there are adjustments we need to make. We will then build out a few potential courses of action and decide which plan is right for you.

Once we’ve collaborated on the right plan for you and your life goals we will finalize the plan for delivery!

Now the work really begins. Once we’ve developed the plan then we need to implement the action items of the plan. Some clients may choose to do this part themselves like their very own “choose your adventure” story while other clients will want Valiant VP to take care of everything for them. Either way, life has a way of putting obstacles in our path, or presenting exciting new possibilities before us so we will be ready to make adjustments as needed!

How We Determine Fees

We set your fee based on a combination of factors, including:

  • Life stage: early career, mid-career, building a family, nearing retirement, post-retirement.
  • Complexity: business ownership, rental properties, equity compensation, estate planning needs.
  • Total Wealth: Higher wealth often requires more oversight, risk management, and coordination.

This structure ensures that the fee you pay reflects the work required to support your unique situation. Importantly, flat fees are fixed and transparent—they don’t change month to month just because your portfolio goes up in value. Clients will typically stay at the same fee for several years, until their life situation changes, complexity increases, or wealth reaches the next level, requiring more advanced planning. This makes your costs both predictable and fair.

Who Is It For

You may be a good candidate for full-service wealth management if:

  • You are a busy professional who prefers a hands-off approach to your finances.
  • You’re not sure where to start with financial planning and could benefit from an ongoing, go-to resource.
  • You’d like to see how all the pieces of your financial puzzle work together.
  • You want a professional to manage your investments and give you ongoing advice.

Pricing - Flat Annual Fee

Lower Complexity — $4,200 per year

    • Example: Single-income household with W2 income, no kids, no rental properties.
    • Planning focus: Building savings, starting investing, understanding equity compensation, and creating a financial foundation.

Moderate Complexity — $6,300 per year

    • Example: Dual W2 income household, one rental property, or young family building wealth.
    • Planning focus: Balancing family and career, maximizing tax efficiency, college savings, insurance needs, and more advanced portfolio management.

Higher Complexity — $8,400+ per year

    • Example: Nearing retirement, preparing to sell a business, multiple rental properties, business owner, or investable assets over $1 million.
    • Planning focus: Retirement income planning, tax-efficient withdrawal strategies, business succession, and estate planning coordination.
    • Note: Clients with over $2 million in investable assets and higher complexity will likely be at $12,000 per year.

High Net Worth & Advanced Planning — $19,000+ per year

    • Example: Retired or post-retirement with investable assets of $5 million+, multiple businesses, multiple properties, family wealth transfer, or complex tax situations.
    • Planning focus: Coordinating estate planning, advanced tax strategies, philanthropic planning, multi-generational wealth management, and managing concentrated investment risk.

**These are just guidelines, the final fee may be more or less than shown here, based on the complexity and needs of each client’s situation.

Option 2

We’ll work with you to understand your life goals, investment strategies, tax planning, risk management, estate needs, and other key aspects of your financial picture. From there, we’ll craft a comprehensive plan, outline actionable steps, and provide ongoing support as you move forward. While you’ll take the lead in managing and monitoring your investments, we’ll be here to consult and meet quarterly—or as often as needed—to ensure you're on track for financial success.

Option 3

One-Time Financial Plan

We understand that an ongoing relationship may not be the right fit for everyone—and that’s completely fine. No hard feelings! For those who prefer a shorter, more limited engagement, we offer a project-based or a one-time financial planning service. With this option, we'll create a customized financial plan designed to help you achieve your goals. Once the plan is delivered, our engagement concludes, but we’re always here if you’d like to revisit or update your plan in the future.

Payment & Engagement Details

Our one-time financial plans are designed to give you clarity and confidence in your financial decisions. The cost depends on the level of planning needed for your individual situation. Higher complexity, higher net worth, business ownership, nearing retirement, and complex equity compensation are all factors that contribute to where you may fall in the pricing structure.

  • Flat costs are fixed—you’ll know exactly what you’re paying before we begin.
  • 50% is paid at the beginning of the engagement, and the remaining 50% is paid upon plan delivery.
  • A typical one-time project lasts 1–3 months, depending on:
    • The complexity of your situation
    • The number of meetings needed
    • How quickly you can organize and provide the required information

This structure gives you a clear, upfront cost with no surprises, and ensures we have the time and focus to create a plan that fits your unique financial life.

Who Is It For

You may be a good candidate for a one-time financial plan if:

  • You have a good handle on your finances and prefer to DIY all the way.
  • You’re looking for a personalized financial roadmap to help you achieve your goals.
  • You want the expertise of a financial professional without the commitment of an ongoing relationship.
  • You have a specific financial challenge or goal, such as budgeting, optimizing your investment portfolio, planning for college expenses, or navigating a major life event like a new job or the loss of a loved one, that you'd like support with.

Pricing - Flat Cost

You Might Be a Great Fit for Valiant Financial Planning If…

  • Your coworkers call you the “Tech Wizard,” but you still feel like a Muggle when it comes to your investment strategy.

  • You are trying to navigate your company’s RSUs and feel like you need a PhD in finance.
  • Your calendar is full of meetings, and you don’t have the time to focus on your personal financial goals.
  • You would prefer to hire a SuperNerd to handle the details while you stick to what you do best: saving lives.

Your Goals, Our Guidance

Your financial goals are one-of-a-kind and specific to you. The good news is we offer three different service tiers, so you can choose the one that best meets your needs. Depending on your situation, we offer full-service wealth management, ongoing financial advice, or a one-time financial plan.

Option 1

Full-Service Wealth Management

Our comprehensive wealth management service provides personalized financial planning, investment management, and ongoing guidance. We will cover key areas such as cash flow, portfolio allocation, equity compensation, and more.

Option 2

Ongoing Financial Planning and Advice Only

Ideal for DIY investors who want professional guidance, this service offers personalized financial planning with ongoing support and guidance while the client implements and manages the investments themselves.

Option 3

One-Time Financial Plans

For those who prefer financial guidance without a long-term commitment, we offer project-based, one-time financial plans. You’ll receive a tailored financial plan with clear, actionable steps to implement on your own, along with the option for follow-up sessions as needed.

Fee-Only Services

We understand that our clients are looking for a trusted financial planner and reliable advice, not a stockbroker with a sales pitch. That’s why we offer a simple, flat monthly fee—so you can plan and budget with confidence. With us, you won’t have to worry about the typical 1%+ Assets Under Management (AUM) fees that can quickly add up as your investments grow, eating into your returns over time.

Focus on Physicians and Tech Pros

As a physician or tech worker employed by a tech giant like Amazon, Microsoft, or Google, you face unique financial challenges and opportunities. We understand that your time is valuable, and we're here to help ease some of that burden. Our financial planning services are specifically tailored to meet the needs of busy professionals like you, offering expert guidance that fits seamlessly into your demanding lifestyle.

Unmatched Expertise

Valiant Financial Planning is led by Dwayne Reinike, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional and a Chartered Financial Consultant®. Client-Centered, Comprehensive Approach

At Valiant FP, financial planning is all about you. Your goals. Your dreams. Your desired lifestyle. That’s why we take a client-centric approach that considers every piece of your unique puzzle. We believe in creating customized financial plans that are as unique as you are—tailored to align with your personal goals and values, with the flexibility to adapt as your needs evolve.

Expert Financial Planning Tailored for Tech Professionals

If you’re employed by a major tech giant, you’re likely entitled to a variety of benefits beyond just a competitive salary. Depending on your employer and role, you may receive equity compensation such as Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) or stock options, along with access to a company-sponsored retirement plan and insurance benefits. We’re here to help you navigate these offerings and address important questions like:

  • What do I do after my RSUs vest?
  • How much of my income should I put into my 401(k)?
  • What is the difference between the Traditional and Roth 401(k) options, and which one should I choose?
  • What is a Mega-Backdoor Roth, and is it right for me?
